‘I can’t imagine living in the U.S. again’ —

Janet Blaser knows a thing or two about reinvention.
Article: by Catey Hill via MarketWatch

Once a food and restaurant writer in Santa Cruz, Calif., the now-63-year-old struggled to find work roughly a decade ago as journalism increasingly moved online. She lost one beloved job, got her hours cut at another, and ended up working odd jobs, including one in human resources at an amusement park.

Istock: Panoramic view of the Mazatlán shoreline.

With little savings and a low salary, the single mother of three struggled — even as she watched friends buy million-dollar homes and pricey cars. “I constantly felt like I wasn’t ‘enough’ and didn’t have ‘enough,’ ” she writes in her new book, “Why We Left,” which profiles 27 expats in Mexico.

A trip to Mazatlán, Mexico — a colorful resort town on the Pacific coast — changed the course of her life. “I fell in love, I felt this heart connection somehow — there were beautiful old buildings, cobblestone streets, plazas with wrought iron and the beautiful glittering Pacific Ocean, warm and swimmable,” she tells MarketWatch. “It just felt deeply healing, friendly and welcoming.” Plus, she saw the interesting cultural, outdoors and foodie offerings of the town and its abundance of English-speaking expats and tourists, and realized that there was almost no information in English about Mazatlán’s many goings-on. It sparked an idea. What’s the big deal?” she explains.
Here’s what Janet's life in Mazatlán is like, including the costs, residency issues, health care and more:

She's 63 and living by the beach in Mexico on $1,000 a month: 'I can't imagine living in the U.S. again'

Frequent Travelers Global Entry Program

If you’re a frequent traveler,
you may consider applying to the Global Entry program, which cuts down wait times in airport border security checkpoints. But watch out! BBB.org/ScamTracker has received reports about misleading websites that fool people into handing over money and sensitive personal information. Cited: Look Out for Misleading Sites:
How the Scam Works.

Frequent Travelers Global Entry Program
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Members enter the United States through automatic kiosks at select airports.

At airports, program members proceed to Global Entry kiosks, present their machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place their fingerprints on the scanner for fingerprint verification and complete a customs declaration. The kiosk issues the traveler a transaction receipt and directs the traveler to baggage claim and the exit.

Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program.
All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and in-person interview before enrollment.

While Global Entry’s goal is to speed travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. Any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.

This is the story of one perfect beach:

The beach nobody can touch
'Made famous by the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach.'
There are hundreds of pristine white-sand beaches along the coast of Thailand,
but one tiny bay, almost hidden by limestone cliffs, has obsessed the world.

For years, people would come in staggering numbers hoping to step into "paradise".
One day last year, it was shut down. Authorities say they are committed to re-opening the perfect beach when they know what the true capacity of the beach is – that is how many people can sustainably visit on a daily basis. The BBC team/crew was given permission to visit the beach: Article.
Proof of how dire a situation has to get before action will be taken:

The beach nobody can touch

About 50-60 blacktip reef sharks started visiting the bay early each morning. The shallow waters are ideal for them and three of the female sharks chose Maya Bay to give birth to their babies. Dr Thon calls them "the coolest creature in the sea" and this, for him, is a gift.

Holiday Travel: Plan ahead; an unexpectedly long day at the airport—

Get ready!

Fall/Winter: Holiday Travel 2018
It's that time of year again when we hear how grim the upcoming holiday travel season will be. Yes, planes, trains, and roads will be crowded, especially now that the economy is perking up. And there's always the chance that snowstorms will gum up the works. But your holiday travel fate is partly in your own hands. Here are 10 tips — some new, some time-tested — for headache-free traveling during this busy season.
Travel Tips by Christopher Hall, AARP
Navigate and Save Time: TIPS!
The holiday travel season is expected to be hectic, plan carefully.

What is the busiest day to depart?
The thing about airport traffic is that it’s about as unpredictable as airfares.
The good people at Matador Network has looked at the 2017 data to help find the busiest days at the airport.
Which, hopefully, shows trends around the same times to watch for this year and into 2019. Data collected: Some are predictable, but others might surprise you, and at the very least, keep you from an unexpected long day at the airport.
Note: All travel dates and corresponding holiday dates are from 2017.

Plan Ahead
It's never too early to start your holiday travel planning. In the early fall, you can take advantage of lower rates and seats aplenty. To jump on a bargain, sign up for sale notifications from your preferred airlines or Amtrak and follow your favorites on Twitter and Facebook where special sale notifications may pop up before they are available to the general public. Discover these other secrets to snagging travel deals.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year
Getting home for the holidays can easily be an expensive and stressful journey.
But here are some tips from travel experts that can help minimize the pain — both financial and logistical — of your next holiday trip.

Or, Nevermind The Holiday Madness
Mindfulness is all the rage these days, so it makes sense that travelers would seek out experiences where they can be more present, incorporating nature, meditation, white sand beaches and pristine trails. Here are 10 vacation ideas that encourage mindfulness and may have a positive impact on your life.

"There's a big difference between simply being a tourist and being a true world traveler."
Michael Kasum : A world of difference exists between the mindset of travelers, who have the inquisitiveness to delve into a country with both hands, and the mindset of tourists, who are satisfied with letting a country pass at arm’s length while chatting with fellow tourists about other diversions. The insatiable curiosity of independent travelers drives them to learn about the history and culture of a destination before going. It then compels them to chat with locals and to fully experience (rather than merely visit) each locale. 'Being a world traveler means saying goodbye to the passive'.
